British Alpaca Futurity 2010

Update on Biosecurity Arrangements for Halter Show Classes

The Futurity Group are pleased to announce increased biosecurity for this major international alpaca event at Stoneleigh Park.

After extensive consultation with authoritative alpaca veterinarians the Futurity Group have decided that all exhibitor holdings will be penned separately from each other, and grouped by address county. It is anticipated that separations between holdings will not be less than 2m and between County by 3m. This will give exhibitors confidence that attending the Futurity with their show team will be safe and secure.

Whilst it is acknowledged that the risk of alpaca to alpaca infection from BVD, Johnes and bTB at shows is possible, all professional advice received from our veterinarians indicates this risk is low, and the extended arrangements now announced makes the risk minimal and therefore acceptable.

Management of risk and assessments of biosecurity are now part of all livestock businesses and the Futurity is proud to be the first to implement such assessments to secure a safe environment for all alpacas so breeders can continue to enjoy and show their best alpacas.

In summary, the Futurity biosecurity arrangements for all infectious diseases including BVD, Johnes and bTB will be:

  1. Adequate separation between all holdings and between county
  2. All alpacas and handlers will be required to walk over disinfection mats when they enter and leave the venue
  3. Rigid veterinary inspection of all alpacas. Alpacas deemed to not be in good health or suspected of not being in good health will be removed to separate isolation areas for subsequent removal from the venue
  4. All exhibitors will be required to maintain clean penning, efficient removal of soiled bedding, and clean footwear when walking in common areas
  5. All alpacas offered for sale will have been tested clear for bTB using the skin test

The Futurity looks forward to meeting you and we all look forward to another successful event celebrating the best of British alpaca breeding.
