British Alpaca Futurity 2010

Halter Show Classes

Under the Futurity system entries must be either progeny of a sire whose owners have nominated him for the Futurity and have agreed to pay the appropriate fee. All such nominated herd sires must have been resident in the UK on or before 26th February 2009 and a list will be available on the website. Alternatively exhibitors should directly approach the sire owners to verify nomination before making their entries.

Or: Should an exhibitor wish to make an entry for which the sire owner is unwilling or unable to nominate, then application to enter can be made upon paying a nomination waiver fee of £100. Please refer to option 3 under Herd Sire Nomination.

Judged show classes will be held for all colours in Huacaya and Suri up to the adult classification of less than 48 months of age. All entries must have been born in the UK. Placing rosettes will be awarded depending on class numbers. Champion and Reserve sashes will be awarded for each colour section.

Substantial prize money is paid for all rosette and sash placings. In addition, the Futurity will pay to the nominated sire owners, a total of 10% of all winnings made by their progeny throughout the show.

The Futurity 2010 Champion will be awarded to the nominated sire whose progeny have won the most points throughout the show.

The Futurity 2010 Junior Herd Sire will be awarded to the nominated sire who has no UK registered progeny born before 26th February 2008 and whose progeny have won the most prize money throughout the show. Owners nominating herd sires eligible for this award must tick the box on the entry form. Confirmation of status will be verified with the BAS registry.

A Most Successful Small Breeder award will also be made to the most successful exhibitor at the show who owns no more than 30 breeding females aged 18 months or over prior to 26th February 2010. Exhibitors eligible for this award must tick the box indicated on the entry form. Confirmation of status will be verified with the BAS Registry.

All judging will be suspended following the lunch break on Saturday afternoon for Dr. Ahmed Tibary’s lecture on Pregnancy Loss. As an added bonus for exhibitors and handlers, free entrance to the seminar will be provided as part of the entry fees paid.

Penning will be available for all exhibitors and the Futurity will assign appropriate penning for all alpacas according to numbers, sex and health status (see below). In addition, no exhibitor will share penning space with alpacas from another farm.

It might be possible to provide electricity within your penning for fans. If this might be of interest please indicate on the halter class entry form by ticking the check box. If available we will contact you with the additional cost.

All exhibitors are reminded to ensure their show team are in proper and normal healthy state, have been wormed within 14 days of the event or have had recent acceptable faecal egg counts and there have been no suspicious deaths on the farm. Inspection stewards will be applying rigorous procedures during inspections and any entry deemed to be in poor body condition, appearing to be unwell, coughing or scouring will be immediately quarantined. Should such an incidence occur, the owner/handler will be asked to immediately remove the alpaca from the event. Signing of the entry form confirms your acceptance of these conditions.

In addition, in recognition of the current concerns regarding the bTB status of some areas of the UK, the British Alpaca Futurity group are asking exhibitors to consider voluntarily arranging for their show team to be tested negative for bTB using the skin test. Such tests are the best science available to us at the moment and will give confidence to all who attend that the management of these risks is at an acceptable level. It would be appreciated if your intent to test is indicated on the entry forms, and that the veterinary negative test certificates be lodged with the Futurity no later than the 12th February 2010. See also rule 11 in the show rules and conditions below.

All alpacas are welcome, however those having presented veterinary certificates for the voluntary bTB skin test will be penned in a separate area away from those who have not presented such certificates.

Bedding will be provided but exhibitors must provide their own feed and water containers and be responsible at all times for the welfare of their alpacas and the cleanliness of their penning. Exhibitors are also reminded to ensure their penning remains clean and tidy, with waste or soiled bedding removed on a regular basis to avoid such contamination being taken into the collecting and show ring.

Everyone’s support and commitment to these conditions will be much appreciated by the Futurity group and all of its exhibitors.

Breeders exhibiting alpacas will be allowed to hang their banners on the penning hurdles, if such space is available to them, as part of their alpaca entry fees. Such banners must not extend above the height of the top of the hurdles.

Owners must not utilise any part of their allocated penning as a farm promotional space. Alpaca owners may apply for official Farm Promotional Pens, which will be placed adjacent to where their alpacas are penned. Such application must be made on the appropriate form found on this website.

All breeders will also be able to leave their farm promotional material free of charge within the specially designated area for alpaca breeder’s information situated on the main floor outside the penning area.

The Futurity is delighted to be able to offer free of charge, all Champion and Reserve ribbon winners the opportunity to have a photograph of their winning alpaca taken by Doug Herrmann. Doug is also part of our seminar programme this year. These digital photographs will be to a very high specification and taken on a specially designed photographic set. Champion winners will also receive as part of their award, an engraved photo frame.

This opportunity will also be available to all exhibitors wishing to have a photograph taken of their alpaca(s). A charge of £15 per alpaca will be made for this, payable at the time. We regret there will be no cheque or credit card payments accepted for this service.

Would handlers please note the Futurity dress code when handling alpacas in the show ring will be black trousers with white shirt. No white overcoats or training shoes (Trainers) will be allowed.

The Futurity 2010 judge will be Jude Anderson (USA) Show secretary Mary-Jo Smith, Chief Steward Iain Smith and Ring Steward Ian Hewitt.
